Dr. Melvyn Goodale - Early Academics

Though Dr. Goodale considered himself a “nerd” in school, he was a good student who enjoyed his classes. He remembers particularly “some absolutely wonderful” high school teachers, whom he thanks for preparing him for the rigor of later academics. At 17 years of age, Mel attended what would become the University of Calgary. He says of his undergraduate years, “I discovered wine, women, and song all at once at the tender age of 17.”

Because of this shift in focus, his grades were perhaps not what they could have been in his undergraduate years. However, having received a degree in psychology and philosophy, and having spent a year overseas to “find [him]self” he became more serious about his academics and wished to take his master’s at the University of Calgary. Thanks to a kind word from his first professor, Dr. David Shaunfield, Mel was admitted.
