International Society for the Empirical Study of Literature and Media is aimed at the advancement of empirical literary research through international and interdisciplinary cooperation. The principal duties of the Society are to support scientific projects through information and cooperation, to further personal contact in all areas of research supported by the Society, to support students and junior researchers in the field of empirical literary research, to press for the application of empirical results, and to organize international conferences.

IGEL was founded in 1987. Since then, biennial conferences have held, alternating between Europe and North America. For a list of these conferences and their Presidents, see Past Conferences.

News and Announcements

  1. For the first time in its history, IGEL is now a registered society; we are registered as a Foundation in the Netherlands.
  2. For the first time in its history, IGEL now has its own journal, Scientific Study of Literature. The journal is automatically included in the IGEL membership. Its first issues are scheduled to appear in 2011.
  3. IGEL has recently completed its twelfth biennial conference in Utrecht. It was a record breaking conference in terms of the number of presentations. Congratulations to the conference organizer, Frank Hakemulder for a great IGEL experience.
  4. The next IGEL conference and Summer Institute will be held in Montreal.
