The University of Alberta requires that all staff and student research involving human subjects, animals, or biohazadous materials must be reviewed and approved by an appropriate University Research Board (REB).
Effective June 1, 2011, the Arts, Science, and Law REB (ASL) along with REBs representing the faculties of Education, Extension, Augstana, St Jean, Native Studies, Physical Education & Recreation, and Agriculture Life, & Environmental Sciences were reorganized into three new REBs. Information about the new boards along with application instructions and supporting documentation for Human and Animal research can be found on the Research Ethics Office Website. The HREB Biomedical Panel and HREB Health Panel operations remain unchanged at this time.
Note: For studies previously approved by the ASL REB, researchers will be asked to choose a new Board the next time they log into the HERO on-line application system. Please select the Board that you feel is best equipped to review your research using the descriptions on the Research Ethics Office Website. If you are unsure how to select a new REB, or require assistance with applications, please contact the Research Ethics Office at 780-492-0459.
