Dr. Endul Tulving - Academics

Described as "charismatic" by fellow Great Canadian Psychologist Dr. Fergus Craik, Dr. Tulving is an interesting teacher. Dr. Tulving believes strongly in learning by experience, and advises against learning strictly by reading. Often, during interviews or classroom demonstrations, Dr. Tulving will illustrate his theories instead of talking about them.

On a recent phone interview, Dr. Tulving was asked what he studies. He replied, "Can you please state the months of the year?" The interviewer responded by naming the months, "January, February..." and so on, to which Dr. Tulving said "Thank you. You obviously know the months of the year. Please name them again in alphabetical order." The confused interviewer stumbled, thought, and could not come up with the correct answer even after five (or so) excruciating minutes. Finally, he said "Just because you know it, does not mean you can say it. That is what I study."
