A Word on the Ethics of Using Animals

The hallmark of any scientist is respect for the phenomena that he or she studies. A scientist who studies animal behaviour in the laboratory has a special responsibility to the animals being studied. This includes responsibility for their welfare and for their treatment within the context of the research project and its objectives. Mistreatment of a laboratory animal, or a failure to maintain it humanely and ethically, is a very serious matter.

We will discuss issues of animal ethics during the course, because they form a crucial part of the education of a researcher in the field of animal behaviour.

For more information on the ethical treatment and use of animals in research, check the Canadian Council on Animal Care web site.
