Instructor Information
Research Opportunity Program
  1. Instructors wishing to participate in PSYCO 299 should submit a completed application form by February 15th.

  2. Instructors offering PSYCO 299 research opportunities will be restricted to academic staff or adjunct faculty in the Department of Psychology. Co-supervision of projects with faculty in other departments will not be entertained at this time.

  3. The instructor's application form should indicate the specific research activities that the student is to undertake (i.e. learning specific skills) as well as any other responsibilities (i.e. attending lab meetings, attending seminars or seminar series).

  4. Any prerequisites or co-requisites must be indicated. Prerequisites and co-requisites must be limited to 100- and/or 200-level courses

  5. Students are expected to work 3-4 hours/week for their PSYCO 299 project. During the first meeting, the instructor should outline all requirements for the research experience and set up a timeline for the program. Students should keep a record of these requirements in their journal.

  6. Instructors should meet with students at least monthly.

  7. Instructors will provide students with a complete two page written assessment of the student’s progress by November 1st (Fall term) or March 1st (Winter term) and discuss this assessment with the student before the deadline for dropping courses (~ November 10th in the Fall term, ~ March 18th in the Winter term).

  8. Students will be required to submit their journal and a two page written report to the instructor on the last day of classes. This report should include a description of the activities the student undertook as part of this research experience, with a short critique.

  9. Instructors will provide both the student and the ROP Advisor with a complete written assessment of the student’s performance in the course within 5 days of the last day of exams.

  10. The instructor will make a recommendation of credit/no-credit when the complete written assessment is submitted. The Associate Chair, Undergraduate will make the final determination of grade assignments.

  11. If the research experience has been positive for both the instructor and the student, the instructor may make a recommendation for the student to enroll in a second PSYCO 299 project.

  12. Projects will be posted to the PSYCO 299 web site around February 18th. At this time, students will have access to the projects and will begin applying for positions. As indicated in the Calendar description, application does not guarantee a position. Application deadline is March 15th.

  13. Instructors will receive project applications by March 18th. It will be the responsibility of the instructor to select their top 3-5 choices of students for his or her project. Instructors may wish to interview potential candidates. Instructor choices of students should be submitted to the Associate Chair, Undergraduate by April 1st.

  14. The Associate Chair, Undergraduate will attempt a match between student choices and instructor choices and circulate to all faculty for approval. Approval needs to be completed by April 8th.

  15. Student assignments are circulated to students for final approval. The matching process should be completed by April 15th.

  16. Instructors should set up a time to meet with the students to finalize the PSYCO 299 project and establish timelines for the various activities.
