This hasn't been updated recently, but there haven't been sufficient
changes since then to matter.

THE HYBALL DISTRIBUTION PACKAGE (11 November 2001)

The distribution package for Hyball's new Fortran-90 code with virtually
no limits on problem size is contained in three self-extracting ZIP-files
 PACKi.EXE (i = 1,2,3). The first, PACK1.EXE, contains ASCII source files
(which you don't need but may find of some interest if you do programming),
 three documentation files -- README.TXT, UPDATE.TXT, READBOOT.TXT -- and some
small supplementary ASCII files of fringe value. For i 2, PACKi contains
executable programs which will unpack into approximately twice the size of
their ZIP-compression. Compiled by Lahey LF90 and no longer compressible by
PKLITE, these are much larger than Hyball's old F77L versions; but ample disk
space is fortunately not a problem for a modern PC.

You have presumably downloaded the Hyball package from website
 web.psych.ualberta.ca/~rozeboom/ in a self-extracting ZIP-file named
HYPAK.EXE containing the PACKi.EXE files and the READ.1ST you are now
reading. To unpack PACKi.EXE, go to the hard-drive subdirectory you want
to receive the decompressed files in this package, and at the DOS prompt
type <path>\PACKi where <path> is PACKi's outset location. You will probably
want to unpack PACK1 first and examine ASCII documents README.TXT and
UPDATE.TXT therein before proceeding further. It has been so long since the
printed WordPerfect version of README.TXT has been updated that I no longer
distribute that at present. But you can easily print the TXT-files in PACK1
so long as you heed the advice at top of README.TXT'S 1st page.

 RUNNING IN DOS

Although I will attempt someday to make Windows-run versions of the Hyball
programs available, these are still all DOS-operated, which can be done either
in stand-alone DOS or under Windows95/98/NT within a DOS window. (Some
problems can arise in older versions of Win95 with large drive partitions, and
I don't know if Windows 3.1 can manage.) It has been suggested to me that
for the benefit of users accustomed to running programs only by clicking on
Windows icons, Hyball's documentation should include some basic instructions
for operating in DOS. So here is my attempt at that. I apologize for
belaboring familiarities while overlooking the sticky bits.

To begin, all Hyball's EXE-programs should be saved in a dedicated
subdirectory -- I call mine "HYBL" because that's short and mnenomic, but
any name you like will do -- that to avoid possible problems should be in
your drive partition C if that is over 2 gb and you operate under Win95(a),
but otherwise can be anywhere. Then edit your AUTOEXEC.BAT file to include
this subdirectory in its searchpath. (If that is unfamiliar to you, seek
local help. Also, your DOS window may be under control of special settings
that you access by right-clicking the MS-DOS shortcut and then clicking on
"properties". If any of these need changing, I can't help you because I
don't understand them either.) Make sure that when you activate the DOS
window you set it to full screen; otherwise, your view will be intolerably
cramped.

Once the unzipped Hyball executable files are in a subdirectory on your
DOS searchpath you are ready to run them on data. Usually this starts with an
ASCII file of raw scores; and you are strongly advised to create a dedicated
subdirectory <datadir> for this and the files that Hyball will derive from
it. (Within limits, <datadir> can be any name easy for you to remember and
located anywhere you like in your directory tree albeit if your operating
system is early Win95, pending clarification of the problems that arise from
that with large partiions, it will be prudent to put <datadir> in drive C.
Note that this installation is quasi-permanent: Once created and stocked
with datafiles, <datadir> will remain in place with contents as you leave
them until such time as you issue Delete commands or viruses strike. As
explained in README.TXT, Hyball analysis of your data generally progresses
through several stages, some of which you may elect to repeat under different
choices of your options; and there are many places in this progression where
you can break off and return at whim. When you boot up or leave another task
to resume this one, click on the MS-DOS icon, type " C: " (or its relevant
alternative) if you aren't already in the correct drive; next type
" CD\<datadir> " at the C:\ command prompt; perhaps type DIR at the
prompt in this subdirectory to refresh your memory of what files have
accumulated here; and finally, again at the C:\<datadir>\ command prompt,
type the basename of the Hyball program you next want to run. On p.6 ff.
of README.TXT you will find detailed instructions on what will happen and
how you should respond.

If you encounter difficulties with installation or operation, write me
 at my e-mail address:

                  rozeboom@.ualberta.ca

and I'll help you to work through the problem.

 ==============================================================================

Contents of these PACKs are shown below with compression information
that you don't really need. ("Size" is the number of bytes in a file's
ZIP-compression while "Length" is its byte size when decompressed.)

Note: Since program HYBLOCK is inadequately documented elsewhere, a
WordPerfect 5.1 manuscript, HYBLOCK.WP5, that details both theory
and runtime operational management of this is included in PACK1.
(Also now included is its Adobe Acrobat transcription, HYBLOCK.PDF.)
If you have not received a printed version of this and wish to use
HYBLOCK but can't read or print either the .WP5 or .PDF textfile,
please let me know and I'll send you hard copy.
