Seeing Voices: The McGurk Effect

Speech perception is generally considered an auditory process. However, most speech perception occurs in the presence of visual as well as auditory stimuli. What happens when the auditory and visual stimuli don't correspond? Do you perceive the stimulus you heard? Do you perceive the stimulus you saw? Or do you perceive something totally different?

In this activity, you will explore the McGurk effect, a fascinating perceptual illusion that occurs when auditory and visual stimuli are mismatched.
