Course Evaluations
As well, The Department of Psychology has begun a great tradition of conducting a "Turkey Challenge" to raise money to support the CBC Christmas Turkey Fund. Last year we raised over $1100.00. This year we hope to raise even more so as many families as possible may enjoy Christmas. I'll match whatever amount you donate. See if you can make me go broke! Michael will pass a hat during the evaluations.
More Memory: Lecture Notes

More Memory

  • Levels-of-processing
  • Judging memory
    • Assessment accuracy

Information Processing

Levels of processing (Craik):
What happens in working memory determines how well something is remembered.

Maintenance rehearsal

  • Holding information active in working memory
  • Less likely to be encoded into LTM
Elaboration rehearsal
  • Tying information to other information
  • More likely to be encoded into LTM

Factors that affect encoding

Encoding specificity (Tulving)

Context (Bransford & Franks)

Criticism of Levels-of-Processing

Circularity

Some physiological support...

Kapur, Craik, Tulving, Wilson, Hoyle, & Brown (1994)
  • Does word contain the letter ____?
  • Does the word represent something living?

Implications for the Final

Level of studying?
Read?
Read and underline?
Take notes?
Elaborate on the objectives?
Take practice tests?

Assessment Accuracy: Reading the Research

How well do you know you know?
Balch (1994)

Pay attention to the function of each section of the report of empirical research
Think about the importance of the research

  • For theories of memory
  • For how you should study for the final
  • For arguing whether or not Psychology should submit exams to the Exam Registry
