Course Assignments and Evaluation

Course assignments can be categorized into three components: examinations, a paper, and research participation.

Examinations
There are two midterm examinations and one final examination. All examinations are of written format, consisting of fill-in-the-blanks, definitions, and short to medium length answers. Examinations will test material from both the textbook and lecture material.

Midterm 1 will test material from chapters 1-4. Midterm 2 will test material from chapters 5-7 and 13. The final examamination is cumulative, testing material from chapters 1-9 and 13.

Paper
This is a short paper, between 2 to 3 pages in length (about 1000 words using 12 point font, double spacing, 1 inch margins). Students will be provided with several journal articles. They will pick one article and write a critique of the article, focusing on the theoretical, methodological, and interpretive aspects of the article.

Research Participation
Required by the Department of Psychology, students must participate in research projects being carried out by staff in the Department. Students will also have to write a brief examination based on the research they participated in, to be given at the time of the final examination.

Student Evaluation
This course is not marked on a curve. Rather, grades are assigned based on absolute scores. Assignment marks will be tallied at the end of the course and converted to the 9-point University grade scale.

Policy on Missed Examinations and Late Papers
Should you miss an examination the standard University regulations concerning death in the family, major illness (i.e., not the sniffles), etc., will apply. Medical forms will be required and must be given to the instructor within two working days. Examinations will be rescheduled at the instructor's earliest convenience.

The paper must be turned in to the instructor during class on November 21. Late papers will be penalized by 10% per day they are late. Of course, the standard rules for missing assignments mentioned above also apply to the paper (i.e., a medical form will prevent a late penalty being applied).

Policy on Plagarism
Simply put, plagiarism will not be tolerated. It is, in essence, intellectual theft. Plagiarism occurs when a person passes off the words, ideas, images, or data of another person as their own (see section 26.1.4.1 of the University Calendar for more details). When writing your paper make sure that your ideas are your own.

Plagiarism is viewed as a serious academic offence by the University and by the Campus Law Review Committee of General Faculties Council. Penalties for plagiarism offenses range from a reprimand to expulsion from the University.
