Candelabra and prickly pear cactus.
Scalesia. On extremely dry Isabela Island, this plant is like
a small bush but it gets to be a tree in the highlands of wetter islands.
The dead leaves stay around the base to provide a mulch and keep in the
water. The plant looks dead at the bottom to discourage insects from
crawling up and eating the leaves. This is a nicely adapted plant.
