Navigating a Paper Chase

Experienced readers form representations of the organization of an information space

This is likened to a "schemata" from physical world navigation; also called "superstructure"

  • Superstructures are socio-culturally dependent, must be learned, and are used by most adult readers

This leads experienced readers to form expectations of what they will find in a piece of text

What advantages or disadvantages might result?

Chapter suggests that drawing an analogy to physical environment navigation in text navigation is of limited value beyond the level of landmark

  • But, as we'll see, route knowledge is often used in hypertext documents. Does this make hypertext something other than text?
