who are the participants and are they appropriate for the study?

Much psychological research is conducted using college and university students. Not only do college and university students constitute a convenient sample, but they also tend to represent a wide cross section of society (in terms of ethnic groups), which is typically ideal in terms of being able to generalize results.

End et al. (2010) recruited a sample of 71 undergraduate psychology students through the psychology department's research participant pool. The students' mean age was 20.21 years, and the majority of participants were white. These students were randomly assigned to one of two groups: the ringing condition, or the non-ringing condition.
