choosing an investigative tool

Once you are ready, there are three primary investigative tools that you can use to find the information and sources that you need:

  • the Web
  • the library catalogue
  • the library database

Each tool searches for different kinds of information and formats. To select the appropriate investigative tool, think back: What kind of information do you need? Do you need scholarly or non scholarly information? Does your information need to be primary, or is secondary information more befitting? Now, where can you find this information? Do you need books, scholarly articles, or newspapers? Would a website be sufficient? It is important to keep these questions in mind, as the type of information you require will determine the kind of investigative tool that is most appropriate to use.
