the consequences of plagiarism

The consequences that arise from plagiarism, regardless of whether the offense is considered deliberate or unintentional are often quite severe. The repercussions can range anywhere from a simple oral or written reprimand, to a failing grade in a course, suspension, or even expulsion from an academic institution.

At the University of Alberta, decisions about penalties are based on the nature of, and extent of dishonesty, the level of the student, the student's knowledge of academic regulations. For this reason, it is important for students to familiarize themselves with the university policies regarding plagiarism and academic misconduct, and take the necessary measures to avoid any such confrontation.

To view the Student Code of Conduct, and how it defines inappropriate academic behavior, see section 30.3.2 of the University Calendar, or click here.

For a comprehensive list of disciplinary actions taken by the University of Alberta in response to academic misconduct, see section 30.4 of the University Calendar, or click here.
