APA style basics

APA style is described in its entirety in the 6th edition of the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association and updates are frequently published on the APAstyle.org website. This publication manual contains information regarding the different parts of a report on empirical research, writing style, grammar, reducing bias in written language, editorial style, manuscript preparation, and the publication process.

If you continue in psychology, the social sciences, business, education or the any of the many other disciplines that use APA styling, you may find it worthwhile in acquiring a copy of the most recent manual.

It is far beyond the scope of this tutorial to go into complete detail on APA style. As such, we're just going to cover the basics:

  • How to format a paper in APA style
  • How to cite information you have used in your paper
  • How to write references for these citations

If you need information pertaining to editorial style, manuscript preparation, and the publication process within the APA framework, it is recommended that you take a look through the published manual itself- this can easily be obtained from the reference section at the library.
