textual formatting

Capitalization and italics or underlining are used to distinguish different types of information in the reference.

You should always capitalize:

  • Author surnames and first initials
  • The first word of an article, chapter or book title
  • The first word after a colon (:) in a title
  • All words in a journal title (not the article name itself)
  • Publication locations
  • Publishers

Capitalization style also enables you to a easily distinguish books from journal articles. For example:

Developmental Psychology » an APA journal
Developmental psychology » is the title of a textbook

As an additional note, titles of books and journals (NOT journal articles), as well as unpublished presentations and papers should be either underlined or italicized.
