Punctuation is used to designate the different parts of a reference.
- Periods are used between components of the reference:
- (ie) AUTHOR(S). (DATE). TITLE. PUBLICATION INFORMATION.
- (ie) AUTHOR(S). (DATE). TITLE. PUBLICATION INFORMATION.
- Commas are used WITHIN a component :
- (ie) AUTHOR, AUTHOR, & AUTHOR.
- (ie) JOURNAL TITLE, ISSUE NUMBER, PAGE NUMBERS.
- Dates and page numbers for chapters are in parentheses ( ):
- (ie) (DATE)
- (ie) BOOK TITLE (pp. page numbers).
