when and when not to cite
A citation must be included for:
- all direct quotations
- all indirect quotations (paraphrases)
- all essential statistics and data that have been collected by someone else
- all major ideas, opinions and interpretations that are not your own
- all information or facts that are not considered common knowledge
Common knowledge refers to information that can be found at large in number of sources other than those you would include in your bibliography (ie. an encyclopaedia), and is generally widely known and undisputed.
***If you are unsure of whether or not something is considered common knowledge or not, cite it- this will protect you from any possibility of accidental plagiarism.
